As a husband, father and business owner, Torey Alston’s commitment to public service started at a young age growing up in a Christian household watching his parents serve the local community. From serving as the Student Member on the Broward County School Board to being a Gubernatorial Fellow under former Florida Governor Jeb Bush to being appointed by then Florida Governors Charlie Crist and Rick Scott to the Florida A&M University (FAMU) Board of Trustees at the age of 25 (youngest appointed Trustee in state history), Torey’s public service have been honed by hard work and his strong faith.

Torey was appointed by Florida Governor Ron DeSantis to the Broward County Commission on Tuesday, November 23, 2021, as the 1st millennial to serve on the dais and will be the 1st black republican to serve a full appointed term.  On the county commission, Torey has pushed fiscal responsibility and won approval from his colleagues creating the county’s first veteran business and preference program.  Prior to being appointed as a County Commissioner, Torey served as Chief of Staff in the DeSantis Administration at the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT), the 1st black to serve in this capacity.  With more than 6200 employees and an annual $10.3 billion budget, Mr. Alston served as the principal advisor to the Governor’s Office, legislature and key stakeholders on all matters of administration, policy, and overall agency operations spanning Central Office (headquarters in Tallahassee), all seven Districts and the Florida Turnpike Enterprise.  During his tenure, he played a key role working across the agency accelerating more than $2 billion in projects during the pandemic, identified more than $250 million in economic recovery for Florida Ports, ensured the agency invested more than $1.2 billion with small, veteran and disadvantaged businesses and developed the agency’s first annual report in more than ten years.

Torey has strong civic engagement as a FAMU National Alumni Association Life Member, Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc. Life Member, and member of the Alpha Rho Boule of Sigma Pi Phi Fraternity.  As a proud Rattler Family, Torey married his college sweetheart Candice and is a proud father to their daughter, Elliott Elizabeth and son, Torey Louis.  Torey and his wife Candice are multi-hyphenates owning several businesses including being co-owners of Interim Healthcare, a home health agency and staffing company serving the south Florida community.  In their free time, the Alstons love Florida beaches, traveling, fishing and spending time with their extended family!
